The Multipede is an instrument born from finding a millipede on the sidewalk and the video recording I made of the interaction. I was impressed by the fluidity and function of the legs of the creature and decided to use it as a score for this new instrument.
The piece has eighty half inch square steel tubes cut to lengths between eleven and a half inches and twelve and a half inches. This visually reflects the legs of the millipede and when struck produces high pitched beating tones that imply wavelike motion. This piece has been performed by a single performer and by a group of four performers with varying degrees of energy and success.
